What are whole foods?
Following a whole foods diet involves maximizing your nutrient intake from natural sources and avoiding nutrient-poor processed foods. Whole foods mainly include plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits and nuts, and animal foods such as eggs, meat, fish and poultry.
Kahunas Culinary Adventure & Who is Sally Fallon?
On one of the many adventures that Big Kahunas Catering LLC as taken us on – one of the best was providing authentic “Farm-to- Table” breakfast and dinner services for social activists and entrepreneurs in the DC area. This two day event offered open discussions that focused on subjects such as: sustainable agriculture, the future of farming, political realities, and the dangers of the American diet.
To prepare for the event, we purchased whole foods such as: local free range eggs, raw honey, unpasteurized raw cheese, cream and milk, bright yellow hand crafted butter, freshly picked organically grown produce, and chicken and pork from deep within Amish country. We ventured down dirt roads to find these ingredients with each Amish farm owner sending us to another farm owner for requested items. With instructions written in perfect penmanship on small pieces of scrap paper, off we would go to another Amish farm for yet another culinary adventure.
On the Saturday between our breakfast and dinner service, we were invited to tour The P.A. Bowen Farmstead – http://pabowenfarmstead.com/ – our tour included information about their dairy operation, artisan cheese-making, and how they naturally raise their pigs, cows, and chickens. The tour was full of excellent information and we were very, VERY surprised with our tour guide, who was an older women with a profound understanding of health, diet, and the importance of connecting spirituality, health and food as one.
Our tour was over, our guide was gone after great conversation and then it happened, I (Amanda) looked around the gift shop and realized with tears welling up in my eyes “OH MY G-D! THAT WAS SALLY FALLON…. I GREW UP ON HER BOOKS – SHE IS A MENTOR, A HERO TO MY FAMILY”!
Her employee saw my reaction and called Mrs. Fallon at her private residence where she graciously invited our host and crew to her home with her husband Mr.Geoffrey Morell.
It was an amazing opportunity to discuss family, goals, business and share personal stories. Our goal is one in the same: work hard, have fun, set an example, remember those who came before us and make a positive impact on humanity.
Whole Foods & Kahunas
Our focus is on offering options that are whole foods based, we use organic produce and work closely with our local pig farmers. We purchase our banana leaves in bulk and hand make our bowls and platter dressings when we present our food, for a one of a kind look. Our goal is to represent the islands, provide high quality food and also be active in our community promoting local sustainability efforts.
Whole Food Sources
Big Kahunas supports local farmers who using natural growing methods. A true farmer works with the land rather than destroying the land to work with them. Many farmers are using a back to basics approach, withholding toxic chemicals and feed to fertilize their fruits, veggies and live stock. The result of natural growing techniques are standalone; meats, produce and eggs cannot be compared to any conventional store!
